Have you seen our Herbin goose quills?
Not the “easy” way to write with “ink”, we admit, but fun!
Even an 8 year old can have fun writing with our burgundy Herbin goose quill. We have other colours also in our Calligraphy and Sealing Wax Supplies section. There is also one with a steel nib.
Here is an eight year old (Figure 1) having a first attempt at channeling Hermione Granger with quill and Pilot Iroshizuku Ink 15ml Cherry Blossom ink.
In hindsight, we would have benefitted from reading some advice about how to write with a feather quill first. Still, I think she did well.
This quill was a birthday present for a little Harry Potter book lover. However, it is a serious grown up item for any hobbyist wanting to branch out into interesting traditional writing tools. Discover life before the ballpoint pen!
Check out our range of writing supplies in our Fountain Pens and Writing Inks category for more traditional writing supplies.
We tried both writing ink and calligraphy ink with this quill. Calligraphy ink is thicker, and unsuitable for fountain pens.
We found that our little tester made much more mess with the calligraphy ink as it behaved differently. The writing ink was used first and much more successfully.
We had no sand, nothing under the paper, and we used regular printer/copier paper. None of this was ideal. We recommend reading up on how to use a quill before you start!
If you’re keen to give this a go, we have a range of writing inks in different colours. The Pilot Iroshizuku inks come in a huge range with beautiful packaging and would make a great gift for anyone with a writing hobby. In addition to Pilot, Herbin also has a great range of colours.
Enjoy!
